Legal Requirements for Wine Labels

The information required on your wine label is legally mandated. Under the new EU regulation, this also includes nutritional information, which must be provided in the form of a nutritional table or as a QR code. This applies to all wines produced from December 8, 2023. The following details do not claim to be exhaustive but serve primarily as an initial overview.

The previous mandatory information, such as alcohol content, nominal volume, trade designation, or quality level, must strictly be placed on the front label.

These requirements are now complemented by the inclusion of the nutritional table. However, anyone who thinks that the legislator is content with a loosely formulated requirement is mistaken. Even the nutritional table itself has specific details to consider, such as the unit of measurement (per 100 ml or in grams), the presentation of values in a table format, and a minimum font size of 1.2 mm. The following values are also mandatory: energy content, protein, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, salt, and sugar. Additionally, allergens must be listed in accordance with the language of the export country, which makes independent label printing with inkjet or thermal transfer printers even more attractive.

For those who want to save space, e-labels can be used. The user is directed to a neutral website via a QR code where they can view the values. Linking to your own homepage or shop is not allowed. In addition to a clear heading for the QR code, other regulations apply. For example, allergy-related warnings like “contains sulfites” must still be included in clear text on the label. The same applies to energy content.
